What Does the Perfect Blog Post Look Like?

28 Jul 2015

On Your Website:

Keyword usage and targeting are still a part of the search engines’ ranking algorithms, and we can apply some effective techniques for keyword usage to help create pages that are well-optimized. When blogging, this is the process we recommend.

Use the keyword phrase:

  • In the title tag at least once. Try to keep the keyword phrase as close to the beginning of the title tag as possible.ParadigmNEXT: What does the perfect blog post look like?
  • Once prominently near the top of the page.
  • At least two or three times, including variations, in the body copy on the page. Perhaps a few more times if there’s a lot of text content.
  • At least once in the alt attribute of an image on the page. This not only helps with web search, but also image search, which can occasionally bring valuable traffic.
  • Once in the URL. Additional rules for URLs and keywords are discussed later on in this section.
  • At least once in the meta description tag. Note that the meta description tag does not get used by the engines for rankings, but rather helps to attract clicks by searchers reading the results page, as the meta description becomes the snippet of text used by the search engines.

On Other Websites:

Sharing your blog across other blogging platforms is not only helps get the word out about your content, but it also triggers backlinks, which helps to rank your content in search terms, as well as provides authenticity to your content.

When sharing your blog, it’s important to share it on relevant, industry specific sites and platforms. To get started, we’ve provided a list of some great sharing sites where you can post your blog entries:

Other Tips:

  • Your title should grab people’s attention, as it is the first thing a viewer will read. Remember to include any keywords close to the start of the title and try to keep it under 70 characters.
  • Make sure any keywords are featured in the first sentence to grab people’s attention. Draw people in by giving a feel for what they can expect from reading the article.
  • Adding an image or graphic to your post will make it more engaging for the reader and make the post more shareable.
  • Ideally keep your post between 500-800 words. This will be long enough to get your message across but also not too long that you lose your reader’s attention.
  • Use links throughout your post that direct viewers to post blog posts or contact pages. You can also list previous relevant posts that viewers who enjoyed this post might be interested in.
  • Summarize the post with a call to action; this could be a link to another post the reader may enjoy or ask them a question which they can reply to in the comments.
  • Add some social media buttons to the post, prompting viewers to share.
