How to Measure the Success of Your Social Media

24 Sep 2014

The success of social media campaigns vary from business to business depending on their goals. While everyone knows it is important to market through social media channels, it is only beneficial if you are measuring and tracking your efforts. There are three main ways to measure social media success: your social reach, your social engagement, and your social conversion.

Measure Your Social Media

The success of social media campaigns vary from business to business depending on their goals.

  1. Social reach is essentially the amount of people you have impacted with your social media. Reach includes likes on Facebook, followers on Twitter, connections on LinkedIn, visitors to your blog, and views and subscribers on your YouTube channel. These types of statistics can be tracked through the actual social media channel, or through scheduling sites like Sprout Social and HootSuite.
  2. Social engagement is another way of referring to social interaction. Are those in your social reach doing something with your message? This can determine the success of your content, which should be valuable enough to inspire your reach to act. Engagement includes: clicks in the links of your social media posts, shares of your Facebook and LinkedIn posts, retweets and mentions on Twitter, and many more!
  3. Social conversion involves those who took that extra step and took action because of your message. This is the lead generation aspect of your business, and it involves completed web forms, registrations for content downloads, online sales, event sign ups, etc. Google Analytics has the capacity to track goal-specific and social-specific traffic and leads. Your website should function as the headquarters for all of your content, which is why you should always link back to your content in your website.

If you are serious about building your business through social media, then tracking is must. Aside from the tracking platforms mentioned (Sprout Social, HootSuite, and Google Analytics), there are several plugins and applications that are free of charge and user friendly. You just have to find what works best for your business and your social media goals!
