5 Good Habits of Team Leaders

18 May 2015

Becoming an effective leader requires more than hard work. It’s more than what you do. It’s all about who you are. By incorporating these five habits into your life, you will develop your personal and professional growth and become an effective team leader.

  1. Know the difference between confidence and arrogance. A team is usually very drawn to a leader who embodies a great amount of self-confidence. Leaders with confidence don’t shy away from challenges and they know how to inspire and motivate others. However, it’s important not to let your confidence overpower others through condescension, attitude, or poor 5 Good Habits of Team Leaderscommunication, because this makes you arrogant.
  2. Become a persuasive communicator. Great leaders can persuade others through good communication. They have the ability to give the right messages at the right time, in a way that is both passionate and honest. It’s important to remember though that communication is mostly nonverbal, therefore, making sure that you are completely conveying your message both verbally and nonverbally is key.
  3. Learn how to be sensitive and responsive to others. Not only does a team respect their leader for acknowledging them, they also appreciate the genuine attention that they provide. Great leaders have an intuitive feel for the needs of their team members. They know how to motivate them, and they know what drives them. Think about the members of your team and take care of them.
  4. Always see the glass half full. Great leaders are optimists, and optimism can liven up the workplace and those around you. This, however, should not allow for recklessness or thoughtlessness. Rather, it’s an opportunity to energize and stimulate your team so that their work is not only enjoyable, but good. When work is fun and things get done, a great leader will know that their optimism has worked.
  5. Become accountable. As a leader, you have to take responsibility for your team’s actions. When things are going well, you and your team will receive praise and recognition. When things are not going well, others will look to you to correct the issues within the team and get back on track. Great leaders don’t blame their team members for their work or single certain people out. They take responsibility for themselves and work to enhance and strengthen their team.
